Lighting is something people think they universally understand - if it doesn't work when they expect it to, they call. The costs they're incurring supporting non-hue compatibility might very well increase. The tech community might be mad for a little while, but we've got our sights set on industrial and commercial contracts now that we've proved Hue's viability in the consumer market.

Hue PM: That won't go over well with the early adopters and the tech community.īoss: I've already run the cost/benefit analysis. We're a for-profit company, not a government or a charity. People should not be using non-Hue approved hardware with our software. Cut off hub connectivity for these 3rd party products.

Plus we're incurring costs responding to all of these non-hue connectivity and reliability issues.īoss: We control a large enough market share now and most of the market is already heavily invested in our ecosystem. Our strategy of making up the initial investment on $60 per bulb hardware is being undermined by cheap 3rd party lighting fixtures. Hue PM: Hue is profitable, but only marginally so. If there were a choice between a lightswitch that worked with a wide array of lightbulbs, and one that worked with only one company's bulbs, guess which one I'm buying?īoss: We introduced Hue back in 2012 w/ a plan to lose money the first 3 years developing the hub, subsidizing partners, and getting our product out in the market. The second might happen for existing customers, but I'm now going to avoid this product as a future customer because compatibility is a feature, and for me, and I'd think anyone who is looking to purchase a tool that manages lighting/small electrics around the home, compatibility is easily the #1 or #2 feature. The first argument is out the door because now they'll just get a lot of support questions around many more products that don't work. My (admittedly cynical) guess is that it was one part "We're fielding a lot of support questions on products that aren't ours and our malfunctioning" and two parts "Our customers will be more motivated to buy Philips Hue products since they're already invested in the existing system". I can't see any upside to this and I can't imagine what the discussion looked like when implementing this decision.

To set up the app, users will need to create a new entertainment area within the updated Philips Hue app on iOS or Android devices.I'll never understand why companies make such customer hostile decisions. Any of these features can be further customized, including brightness levels, 'immersion controls' from subtle to intense, and a mode change for easily switching out the color pallet.

For music, Philips Hue Sync creates light scripts based on the beat and type of song 'on the fly,' and matches the playing music with dynamic lighting effects. The app works by creating light scripts for nearby Hue lights, based on screen-grabbed content from the Mac and what Philips calls a 'smart color algorithm.' With this information gathered, the app then matches the chosen Hue lights to the on-screen action of games and films in real time. Using the app, users can sync their Hue lights to films, music, and games that they're interacting with for an even more 'immersive experience,' according to the company.
